My Review

"A Witch's Guide to Magical Murder" Review by Farahilda (4.25/5 stars) I stumbled upon this book during one of my late-night bookstore wanderings (yes, I'm that witch who haunts bookshops after midnight), and the premise of a PI witch returning to her magical hometown instantly caught my attention. As someone who also left their magical community under... complicated circumstances, I felt an immediate connection to Beatrix's story. Let me tell you, this book was like a perfectly brewed potion - mostly delightful with just a few bitter notes that didn't quite sit right. The magical small-town setting of Witchlight Cove absolutely enchanted me, especially the fayre with its pie-eating contest (though I do wish they'd included more details about the magical baking techniques - I have opinions about levitating pastries!). The mystery element kept me turning pages well into the witching hour, with enough red herrings to stock a magical fishmonger. I particularly enjoyed how the author wove themes of homecoming and facing one's past throughout the narrative. Beatrix's relationship with her dog Eva warmed my heart - as someone who shares my cottage with three familiars (two cats and a rather opinionated raven), I completely understand that bond. However, I found myself occasionally frustrated with Beatrix's character development. For a supposedly experienced PI, she sometimes made decisions that had me wanting to throw protective wards around her. There were moments when her professional expertise seemed to vanish faster than a poorly cast illusion, especially when dealing with people from her past. The romantic subplot felt a bit rushed, like a love potion that hadn't simmered long enough. I would have appreciated more time developing that connection naturally, though I understand some readers enjoy a faster-paced romance. Despite these minor grievances, I found myself thoroughly invested in the story, especially as it raced toward its shocking conclusion. The world-building is delightful, and the supporting characters (particularly Maddie and Yanni) add wonderful depth to the narrative. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely, especially to those who enjoy their mysteries with a magical twist. It's perfect for reading on a rainy evening with a cup of enchanted tea (my personal recipe includes moonflower petals and starlight). Just don't expect a cozy mystery - this one has more bite than your average magical tale. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go pre-order the sequel before my familiar uses my bookmark as a chew toy again.

Book Description

PI by day, reluctant witch by necessity—Beatrix has a case to crack and a legacy to reclaim. I walked away from my magic, my past, and the home I was born to protect. For the last decade, I’ve been scraping by as a PI in the non-magical world, solving human problems and ignoring the legacy that should have been mine. My magic is barely worth mentioning—unless you count my menial ability to sense emotions, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. But then my oldest friend breaks into my flat with a desperate plea and I’m suddenly heading back to Witchlight Cove—a hidden magical town on the British coast I swore I’d never see again. The Eternal Flame, an enigmatic magic that protects the town, has vanished. A ruthless property developer is circling my family home like a vulture. And a poisoning at the village fête proves there’s something far worse lurking in the shadows. If I don’t figure out what’s going on, I’ll lose everything—not just my inheritance, but the only people I’ve ever called family. With my fiercely loyal retriever by my side, a murder to solve, and a smug, insufferably attractive rival getting under my skin, Witchlight Cove is about to test me in ways I never imagined. Some legacies can’t be escaped. Some flames refuse to die. Perfect for fans of strong heroines, lovable animal sidekicks, and heart-racing urban fantasy, Secrets of the Forgotten Heir delivers action, charm, and supernatural surprises. With stand-alone mysteries, sharp humour, and a swoon-worthy slow-burn romance spanning the series, it’s an unmissable treat.
