My Review

Let me tell you, I wasn't expecting to be so thoroughly swept away by this marriage of convenience story. The Viking-inspired setting feels authentic and lived-in, not just a superficial backdrop. And the magic system? It's refreshingly straightforward while still being fascinating - especially the telepathic connection with dogs (I mean, who hasn't wished they could actually talk to their furry companions?). What really made this book special for me was how the author handled grief and healing. Brynn's journey is handled with such care and authenticity. She's not just a tragic figure or a damsel - she's a fully realized character dealing with deep trauma while maintaining her strength and agency. And can we talk about Cenric? Finally, a male lead who actually communicates and shows emotional intelligence! Their relationship develops in a way that feels both romantic and respectful. I particularly loved the world-building details and the political intrigue woven throughout. The author clearly did her research on Norse and Anglo-Saxon culture, and it shows in the little details. However, I will say that some of the dialogue occasionally felt a bit modern for the setting, pulling me out of the story momentarily. The romance is definitely slow-burn (which I prefer), though there is one spicy scene that might make some readers blush. It's not gratuitous though - it serves the character development and emotional arc. One small criticism: I felt some character motivations could have been shown rather than told at times. But honestly? That's a minor quibble in what was otherwise a thoroughly engaging read. My verdict? 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy fantasy romance with strong character development, Norse-inspired settings, and themes of healing and second chances, you need this book in your life. I'm already counting down the days until the sequel!

Book Description

After the murder of her child, Brynn of the Istovari wants nothing more than to escape the shackles of her birthright. As a sorceress and the last of a once-great bloodline, many still seek to use her for their own schemes. Brynn will do anything for the chance at freedom, even if it means marrying an upstart warrior from the far north. Cenric needs a wife—but not just any wife—a sorceress. Having recently reclaimed his inheritance after a youth spent across the sea, a sorceress will bring security and legitimacy in his estranged homeland. A marriage gives both Brynn and Cenric what they want—for now. In the far northern reaches lies a land ruled by pride and strict codes of honor. As Brynn and Cenric struggle to navigate the aftermath of their hasty union, they soon realize that rival factions within the kingdom are on the verge of war once again. Alone, they will be destroyed by the coming storm. Together, they might stand a chance.
