My Review

The way this book weaves modern urban fantasy with ancient Celtic lore is absolutely enchanting. I found myself completely swept up in Kierse's journey, especially how she navigates the complex dynamics of power, trust, and identity. The magic system is so thoughtfully crafted – it feels both fresh and authentically rooted in traditional mythology. I particularly appreciated how the seasonal aspects of power created natural tension throughout the story. The character relationships are deliciously complicated, especially the dynamics between Kierse and both Graves and Lorcan. The chemistry practically crackles off the page! Though I must admit, sometimes the romantic elements did overshadow other aspects of the plot that I was eager to explore more deeply. What disappointed me somewhat was the pacing in the middle sections. There were moments where the story seemed to get bogged down in exposition, and I found myself wishing for more forward momentum. Also, while I enjoyed the European settings, they didn't quite capture my imagination the way the New York supernatural community did. However, the themes of found family, healing from trauma, and choosing one's own path really resonated with me. As someone who's had to make difficult choices about loyalty and trust in my own life, I found these elements particularly moving and authentic. I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. Despite its occasional pacing issues, the rich mythology, complex characters, and emotional depth make it a worthy read for anyone who loves urban fantasy with a deep mythological backbone. Just be prepared for some slower moments – and maybe keep a notebook handy to track all the magical politics! Honestly, I'm already anxiously awaiting the next book. Anyone want to theorize about what happens next over a cup of fae-blessed tea?

Book Description

Can you trust the dark when you know that it lies? Kierse McKenna just shattered the Monster Treaty. Again. It wasn’t entirely her fault. The job was supposed to be simple: steal a goblin-made bracelet off of the Queen of the Nymphs in her own palace. Trade the bracelet for a way to uncover the truth about her past. Except everything goes sideways. And then he shows up to save her. Graves—the warlock who ensnared her, betrayed her, and left her to fend for herself. He’s a villain. A monster draped in charm and shadows. And gods help her, he always knows exactly what she wants. But Graves never does anything for free. He has a job for his favorite little thief. One that will pit her against the most powerful monsters in existence, including his mortal enemy, the Oak King. An ancient artifact has been located, and only together can they hope to steal it. She just has to let him in. But once she lets a monster in, he’s impossible to forget… and even harder to resist.
